Exploring NIKKOR Lenses: Mongolia – AF-S-NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR

The fifth largest desert in the world and Asia’s largest, the Gobi covers parts of northern and north-western China, as well as southern Mongolia. It is a rain shadow desert formed by the Himalayan mountain range that locks rain-carrying clouds from the Indian Ocean.

While in the Gobi desert, Nikon professional photographer Scott A. Woodward and photography enthusiast Chantal Windley used the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR, a versatile lens that is great for travel photography, to document a traditional mode of transportation for Mongolians.

With a 5x zoom range, the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR allowed Scott and Chantal to capture everything, from the expansive sand dunes to close-up portraits of the camel riders and camels.

The lens is designed with a Vibration Reduction (VR) system, which compensates for blur caused by camera shake, providing an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 3.5 stops*1 faster. With the VR mode switched on, Scott was able to achieve sharp and crisp images even when shooting with the camera handheld.

When shooting in dusty environments, it is recommended that you avoid changing your lens. The versatile AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR, allows you to explore a range of focal lengths, without needing to carry multiple lenses.

“If I could pack only one lens for a day of shooting travel documentary imagery, this would be it: the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR,” Scott A. Woodward.

*1 Based on CIPA Standard. The value is achieved when: DX-format lenses are attached to a DX-format digital SLR camera, FX-format lenses are attached to an FX-format digital SLR camera, and with the zoom set at the maximum telephoto position.
