1. Key Features
Only the Z mount system could achieve this f/2.8 ultrawide-angle zoom lens that offers the ultimate image quality with the world's shortest* and lightest* package. Thanks to the adoption of a double-sided aspherical lens for the front element as well as the short flange focal distance realized with the Z mount system, great reduction of its total length and weight and highly improved optical performance are attained. Also, the attachment of screw-on filters is made possible at the lens front, despite it being a fast f/2.8 ultrawide-angle zoom lens starting at 14 mm.

Maximizing the advantages of the Z mount system, this ultrawide-angle zoom lens delivers superb rendering performance exhibiting outstanding resolution all the way to the edges of the frame even at the f/2.8 maximum aperture, that surpasses that of the current F-mount lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED. Offering the ultimate in zoom lens image quality with the extremely short and light body, this f/2.8 zoom lens serves as the core of the Z mount system for both still-image shooting and video recording.
Because faster shutter speeds can be used without increasing ISO sensitivity even in low-light situations, high-quality images with minimized image blur or noise can be reliably captured. In addition, the use of shallow depth of field achieved with the f/2.8 maximum aperture enables expression of greater bokeh that brings impressive emphasis to the primary subject.
The adoption of three aspherical lens elements with four aspherical surfaces effectively controls sagittal coma flare, even at the maximum aperture. Point light sources such as stars positioned at the periphery are reproduced as beautiful, sharp point images throughout the zoom range, making fascinating starscape photography possible.
In addition to Nano Crystal Coat, employed for high-performance NIKKOR lenses including the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, the ARNEO Coat anti-reflection coating system is adopted for this lens. Since Nano Crystal Coat is effective for incident light from a diagonal direction and ARNEO Coat handles that from a vertical direction, ghost and flare are minimized when these coatings are utilized together, regardless of the direction from which light enters the lens. Light sources such as the sun are often included in ultrawide-angle shots, however, since the NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S can capture sharp and clear images even in strongly backlit situations, you need only focus on the composition of a photograph.
Four ED glass elements are carefully positioned to suppress chromatic aberration causing color fringing that is likely to occur at the edges of subjects in landscape and starscape photography.
The same layout of the zoom ring and focus ring as the earlier AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, as well as the same angle of rotation of these rings maintains familiar operability with no confusion or discomfort for those who switch from the F-mount lenses. Smooth and accurate focusing is also ensured with the improved operational response of the focus ring.
Because the adoption of a double-sided aspherical lens makes the front element smaller, you can attach 112 mm screw-on filters* when the HB-97 Lens Hood is used, even to this fast f/2.8 ultrawide-angle zoom lens starting at 14 mm. In addition, the lens is equipped with a filter slot located at the rear mount opening, which allows you to attach trimmable filter sheets, such as gel filters.
*112 mm Neutral Color NC Filter and 112 mm Circular Polarizing Filter II will be released together with this lens.
A lens hood that supports filter attachment (HB-97) and normal lens hood (HB-96) are available. When the HB-97 is attached, screw-on filters can be attached directly to the hood. The HB-96 is suited for use when no filter needs to be attached to the front. Its smaller size increases portability.
The beautiful image expression utilizing superior rendering performance realized with the f/2.8 maximum aperture can also be applied to video recording, as the design took video recording into consideration.
Drive sounds generated by the AF mechanism incorporating a stepping motor (STM) and the aperture mechanism are minimized. Additionally, a "click-less" control ring is adopted to prevent unnecessary operational sounds with video recording even in quiet surroundings or situations.
You can record videos in which brightness changes slowly and smoothly using the control ring for natural video recording. Functions that can be assigned by the camera to the control ring include ISO sensitivity, aperture, and exposure compensation. Operational sounds associated with rotating a command dial or pressing a button during recording can be minimized.
Repeated shock analysis and testing of actual products with a focus on moving parts within the lens barrel have achieved increased strength and durability. Superior dust- and drip-resistant performance* is realized with a sealing for various sections including movable parts to prevent dust and water droplets from entering the lens, as well as the adoption of a rubber seal around the lens mount.
*Perfect dust- and drip-resistance is not guaranteed under all conditions.
Nikon’s original fluorine coat has been applied to the outer surface of the front-most lens element, which provides superior antifouling performance. It effectively repels dust or dirt for easy removal even if it adheres to the lens surface.
The lens itself is equipped with a diaphragm blade unit with its own drive mechanism, that uses electronic signals from the camera for even more precise aperture control, delivering consistently stable exposure control (AE), even during continuous shooting.
As this type of lens is often mounted on a tripod, it has been equipped with an information panel that can be used to confirm information such as aperture value, shooting distance, and depth of field without looking through the camera's viewfinder.
An L-Fn button, to which a function can be assigned just as with camera Fn1 and Fn2 buttons, has been adopted, allowing users to customize operation to suit their own preferences for improved shooting flexibility.
