The Correct Lens is Essential
There are two main factors that determine whether a lens is capable of extreme close up or macro (MC) photography.
The first thing to look for is a low minimum focusing distance, which will allow you to be physically closer to your subjects, such as the NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8 S which can focus at just 16cm.
Secondly, we recommend lenses with a 1:1 reproduction ratio. This means that if an object is 3cm in real life, it will be projected onto your image sensor at exactly 3 cm, which allows for the most detail possible.

NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8
While not technically a macro lens, the NIKKOR Z 70-180mm f/2.8 features a short minimum focus distance of 27cm and a long focal length. Together, this allows for captivating close-ups.
When combined with a 2x Teleconverter, the maximum reproduction ratio becomes 1:0.96 which is extremely close to our specialty macro lenses.
