1. Key Features
Optimal balance between a compact, lightweight design and wide zoom range was pursued while maximizing the advantages of the Z mount system. With a light and compact body of approx. 570 g, a wide variety of scenes can be captured while maintaining mobility during travel and in everyday use.
Wide coverage of angle of view from 24 mm to 200 mm supports various scenes and subjects such as wide-spread landscapes with the wide-angle range and distant subjects with the telephoto range. This versatile lens is convenient, for example, during travel where baggage might usually become bulky. The NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR can also be used as a lens that covers up to telephoto 300 mm (35mm-format equivalent) when image area is set to DX format or when it is attached to the Z 50 camera, expanding the shooting field and opportunities.
Thanks to the Z mount system, high optical performance, compact design and a weight of only 570 g are realized, allowing you to carry it around and capture every moment that you encounter. An aluminum mount is used for the first time in a NIKKOR lens, achieving light weight while attaining superb durability. Also, thanks to the large-diameter Z mount, the front lens elements can be made smaller and the rear lens elements larger. Consequently, the center of gravity when zooming has been more carefully considered, providing comfortable shooting with unchanged weight balance even when the lens is zoomed in. Smaller front lens elements also contribute to achieving a filter-attachment size of 67 mm – smaller than any competitive model.
Despite being a telephoto zoom lens, the minimum focus distance of 0.5 m at the wide-angle end and 0.7 m at the telephoto end, as well as the maximum reproduction ratio of 0.28× are realized; thus allowing you to approach more boldly to a subject and take pictures in large size. You can now shoot table-top photos while sitting down in a café, as well as create impressive expression such as making flowers blurred in the background with close-up photography using the telephoto range.
Various lens elements that offer superior aberration-correction capability and high-performance anti-reflection coating systems are employed to enable the capture of high-quality images for both stills and movies.
Thanks to the large diameter and short flange focal distance of the Z mount system, the rear lens elements can be made larger, delivering high optical performance despite a compact design. Also, in addition to the two ED glass and two aspherical elements, an aspherical ED glass element is employed to realize high optical performance as well as a compact design, demonstrating superior resolution across the entire frame even at the maximum aperture.
In the optical system, two ED glass, two aspherical lens and one aspherical ED glass elements are incorporated, providing sharp images without color bleeding.
ARNEO Coat is adopted in this lens for the first time in a non-S-Line lens, achieving clear images with less ghost and flare, even at wide-angle 24 mm that is likely to include the sun within the frame. Moreover, because point light sources can be reproduced as point images even in the peripheral areas of the frame at the maximum aperture, beautiful night landscape shots can be captured during travel.
Usability has been intensively considered not only for still shooting but also for movie recording. High movie performance is realized via the adoption of a variety of features that enable smooth and comfortable recording, such as superior subject tracking during zooming operation.
Employing an STM (stepping motor) in the AF mechanism and diaphragm mechanism ensures outstandingly quiet operation. Operation sound is also reduced with a control ring that allows click-less operation, letting you record in quiet situations without worrying about any annoying sounds being recorded.
Smooth operational feel of both the zoom ring and control ring enables natural movie expression by realizing gradual and natural change of angle of view, focus and exposure. A function selected from various options such as focus, ISO sensitivity, aperture and exposure compensation can be assigned on the control ring, which can help achieve more comfortable movie recording and smooth operation.

Highly effective vibration reduction (VR) that provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 5.0 stops* faster is incorporated in the lens body. Thanks to this, even while shooting with slow shutter speeds, camera shake can be effectively compensated, thus expanding your range of expression. In addition to the carefully designed body considering dust- and drip-resistant performance with sealing for various areas, fluorine coat is applied to the front lens element which effectively repels dust and dirt for easy removal even it adheres to the lens surface. Thanks to a diaphragm blade unit with driving mechanism employed in the lens body, the camera can accurately control aperture via electronic signals. This delivers stable aperture control (AE) constantly, even during continuous shooting. Moreover, a zoom-lock switch that prevents the lens from extending unexpectedly, allowing you to move freely without worrying about hitting the extended lens.
